7 Days Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route
Tour Overview
The Kilimanjaro Climbing via Lemosho Route is the best Kilimanjaro Private Hike Experience for hikers who don’t need to be in the crowded routes. Njofu Expedition ensures a unique and personalized hiking adventure for every climber.
The Shira Route is a little-used trail that begins near Shira Ridge. It is nearly identical to the Lemosho route. In fact, Shira was the original route, and Lemosho is the improved variation. Although Shira is a varied and beautiful route, it is less favorable than its successor due to the relatively high altitude of Shira’s starting point, which is accessed quickly by vehicle. It is possible that climbers will experience some altitude-related symptoms on the first day while camping at 11,800 feet.
The route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the west, beginning with a long drive from Moshi to Shira Ridge. The vehicle bypasses the rainforest zone, and the hiking trail begins on Shira Ridge. The Shira route crosses the entire Shira Plateau from west to east in a pleasant, relatively flat hike. Then the route traverses underneath Kilimanjaro’s Southern Ice Field on a path known as the Southern Circuit before summiting from Barafu. Descent is made via the Mweka route.
Njofu Expedition offers Shira as a seven or eight-day private climb. The eight-day variation adds a stay at Moir Hut on day three before going to Barranco Camp on day four. With Njofu Expedition, you can expect expert guidance, comfortable accommodations, and unforgettable experiences.

After a well-earned lunch, the trail descends by roughly 650 meters to Barranco Camp. On this stretch, you’ll enjoy stunning views of the Western Breach and the Breach Wall. Day 04 Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Elevation (ft): 13,000ft to 13,100ft
Distance: 5km
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
At Njofu Expedition, we design this short day for essential acclimatization. The trail descends through the Karanga Valley, crossing ridges and valleys, before joining the Mweka route. Turning left, the path ascends the ridge, and after about an hour, we arrive at Barafu Hut.
The Karanga Valley marks the last water point on this route, as no water is available at Barafu Camp. The name “Barafu,” Swahili for “ice,” reflects the camp’s harsh, exposed environment. The camping area is narrow, rocky, and subject to relentless gales, making it vital to familiarize yourself with the terrain before nightfall to ensure safety.

Accommodation: Karanga Valley Campsite
Day 05 Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Elevation (ft): 13,100ft to 15,300ft
Distance: 4 km
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
With Njofu Expedition, your journey continues after breakfast as we depart from Karanga and head towards the junction connecting with the Mweka Trail. We proceed to the Barafu Hut, marking the completion of the South Circuit. This route provides breathtaking views of the summit from multiple angles. Upon arrival, we set up camp, rest, savor a delicious dinner, and prepare for the ultimate summit day. From this vantage point, you’ll enjoy stunning views of the majestic Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.
Day 06 Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Hut
Experience Kilimanjaro’s Summit with Njofu Expedition
- Elevation (ft): 15,300ft to 19,345ft (and down to 10,000ft)
- Distance: 5 km ascent / 12 km descent
- Hiking Time: 7–8 hours ascent / 4–6 hours descent
- Habitat: Arctic
At 2 AM, Njofu Expedition begins the final push to the summit, navigating between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. Ascending northwest through heavy scree, we aim for Stella Point on the crater rim. This stage is the most mentally and physically demanding part of the journey.
At Stella Point (18,600ft), a short rest awaits, along with a breathtaking sunrise (weather permitting). From here, snow may accompany your final 1-hour ascent to Uhuru Peak. Upon reaching the summit, you’ll stand at the highest point of Mount Kilimanjaro. For faster hikers, the sunrise view from the summit is an unforgettable reward.
After celebrating your achievement, we begin the descent, heading directly to the Mweka Hut campsite, with a lunch stop at Barafu. Gaiters and trekking poles are essential for navigating the loose gravel during the descent. Mweka Camp, located in the upper forest, often experiences mist or rain by late afternoon. That evening, enjoy your final dinner on the mountain and a well-deserved night’s rest.
