Duration: 5 Days

The Marangu route is a classic trek on Mount Kilimanjaro. It is also known as the “Coca-Cola route.” It is the oldest and most well-known path. People like the Marangu route because it has a gentle slope and is thought to be the easiest path on the mountain. It is also the only route with sleeping huts that are set up like dormitories.

This route up Kilimanjaro summit needs a minimum of five days, but it’s unlikely that you’ll make it to the top in that amount of time. When climbing Kilimanjaro via the Marangu route, it is highly recommended to spend an extra day on the mountain to get used to the altitude.

We don’t lead climbs on the Marangu route, though, because it is so popular. The path goes up and down the mountain on the same path, so there aren’t many different views. It is also the most popular route because of this. Marangu is popular only when it’s raining, when the huts are more comfortable.

You will meet our Njofu Expedition driver at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), and he will take you to your hotel in Moshi town. There, you will meet your guide, who will tell you about your upcoming trek and check your gear to make sure you have everything you need for the mountain. On this day, you can rent the gear you forgot.

Overnight at Lindrin lodge or Park view hotel

  • Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all included.

You will be picked up from your Moshi lodge after breakfast and taken to the Marangu gate. Once all the paperwork is done, you can start your hike, and soon you’ll be walking through the dense rainforest. As you walk to the Mandara Hut, you might see some primates and some beautiful plants. After a well-deserved break, your guide can take you to the Maundi Crater, which has a great view of the interior of Kenya.

  • We’ve gone 8.3 km/5.2 min.
  • It should take about 5 hours
  • Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all included.

Breakfast is the first meal of the day. Shortly after you leave Mandara Hut, you will reach the timberline and then enter the heath and moor zone. About 4 to 6 hours later, you’ll see the 3700m-high Horombo Hut. You will have a great view of Mawenzi, Kibo, and the wide plain of the Masai steppe from the hut.

  • The distance traveled was 12.5 km/7.8 mi
  • It should take about 9 hours
  • Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all included.

The stage for today is long and hard. The well-built trail goes past the “Last Water Point” and then the “saddle.” This plateau, which has almost no plants, connects the main summit, Kibo, to Mawenzi. The goal for today is the Kibo Hut, which usually takes about 5 to 6 hours to reach. Here, you’ll eat dinner early in the evening and then go to bed early because the night will be short.

The route is about 9.5 kilometers (5.9 miles) long and should take about 7 hours. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included

Today is “The Big Day,” the stage at the top. Around midnight, you will start your final climb, which will be long and hard. As the Hans Meyer Cave at 5220m is passed, the climb goes up slowly but surely. At sunrise, you will reach Gillman’s Point (5681m), which is the edge of Kilimanjaro’s crater. Here, the sun will slowly start to warm up the land. You’ll quickly forget how cold it was last night, and after another 1–2 hours of hiking, you’ll reach Uhuru Peak at 5895m. When you get back to Kibo Hut, you’ll find a warm meal waiting for you. After a 1- to 2-hour break, you’ll head back down to Horombo Hut.

The distance covered is 22 km (13.7 mi), and it should take between 12 and 15 hours. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included.

The last stage goes through the heath and moor zone to the Mandara Hut (2700m), where a warm lunch is waiting. Soon, you’ll pass the tropical rainforest again, and after 6 hours of walking, you’ll be back at the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (1860m). When you’re done with your mountain guides, you’ll take a short transfer back to your hotel in Moshi. Once you get there, you can take a warm shower to relax and celebrate reaching the top of Mount Kilimanjaro.

  • Distance traveled: 12.9 miles or 20.8 km

It takes about 8 hours and includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Overnight at Lindrin lodge or Park view hotel

After the Kilimanjaro trek, you have the rest of the day to relax before your flight home. Depending on what time your flight leaves, you could go to Moshi town and buy some souvenirs before going to the airport. If you want to keep exploring Tanzania, you can add on safari, Zanzibar, and other things.
